Before I was married I was living in a Catholic residence for young women. I was deeply ashamed when I learned I was pregnant – I felt the stigma of being unwed and was not ready to be a mother – I took time from work and locked myself in my room with a bucket and wire coat hanger. I knew it should be sterile so I wrapped a piece of cloth dipped in alcohol around the top and shoved the hanger inside – soon I bled and bled and made trip after trip to the shared bathroom with the blood filled bucket that was covered with a large plate. A friend took me to the hospital where I was told that I lost the baby- I think they probably knew what happened but didn’t want to call the police – like if I’d been shot – My only regret is that it was illegal at the time and I am grateful to have lived to marry and have had 2 children. Other women were not so fortunate-
