I have a wonderful 2 year old daughter that I love with all my heart. If I did not have the strong support structure that I have with my family, I would have had an abortion. The father was a loser from another country that I found out was still married and had abandoned his 3 children with no plans to go back to see them. I’m a single mother that makes $30,000 a year and I owe $40,000 in student loans and I have to live off credit cards most of the time. I had to sell my house and move in with my parents to cover hospital bills to have my daughter since I had nothing saved up for an accidental pregnancy. I receive no child support and I make a few hundred dollars over the limit to receive any kind of assistance. 80% of my check goes toward health care, child care, and basic necessities for my child while the rest goes toward student loans, and a car payment as walking 20 miles with a child to get her to daycare and me to work isn’t much of an option. As much as I love my child and it would kill me for anything to happen to her, I wonder how my life would have went if I had an abortion. Would I have my degree now and a better job that would have provided a better life for a future child? Would I have met someone and gotten married? There are so many what ifs and it makes me feel shameful for even thinking about it because that is how I was raised in my family and society as a whole. A woman should be able to make the choice of either having a child or having an abortion without the public shaming or some body of government telling you what you can or cannot do with your body. If we allow a government to make this decision for us then there should be the same treatment for males such as mandatory vasectomy if they can’t provide for or want children. The law is harsh on women, but males don’t have to live with the consequences the same as women.
